Even if your closet is stuffed with clothes, there always seems to come a time when you lack at least one essential for the darkest, coldest days of winter. It is the rare woman who sails through the season relying on items she already owns. For most of us, a preseason wardrobe review that takes into account what you have and what you may need to purchase in terms of stylish winter outwear, makes for a more fashionable winter.

When preparing for the season, be sure you have these seven winter must-haves:

  1. A cold-weather dress — Choose a winter-friendly fabric like velvet, knit or wool for a dress that’s naturally warm, and a forgiving cut that makes navigating slippery streets a breeze. Choose a neutral shade and swap in accessories or jewelry to change the look of the dress.
  2. A cozy winter sweater — A sweater that can be added to any outfit is a definite must-have. A neutral color may be more versatile but choosing a sweater in a bright jewel shade can help chase away those winter-day blues. Dress it up with a skirt or pair of slacks or dress it down with jeans for the weekend.
  3. A comfortable pair of boots — Boots are cold weather must-haves — just be mindful of their fit and function as well as their look. Choosing a pair that are lower-heeled and can be worn with trousers, dresses or skirts is often a smarter choice than a higher, dressier pair that aren’t as comfortable for walking. Not sure about color? Black, brown, navy or tan are all choices that should coordinate with nearly everything in your wardrobe.
  4. A pair of black leggings — Leggings are a great addition to a dress or skirt for additional warmth instead of — or in addition to — tights. Add a blouse, toss on a chunky sweater, slip on some cute winter boots and you’ve got a great casual day look as well.
  5. A fashionable (and warm) hat — There are so many headwear choices today that there’s no reason to walk around with a cold noggin. For an easy, coordinated look, choose one that comes with matching gloves or mittens to up your stylish winter outwear game.
  6. A long-sleeve T-shirt or two — A tee that fits snugly against your body makes a great base that you can layer under a sweater, blouse or vest and will help keep you warm all day. Again, neutral shades make these shirts more versatile.
  7. A killer winter coat — Stylish winter coats for women’s every need and preference are available at a variety of price points. Look for a coat that is versatile, fashionable and warm. If you’re frequently outdoors, walk to and from work or simply hate being cold, consider a stylish women’s parka that actually generates warmth, such as Kelvin Coats’ on-trend heated jackets for women.

With these must-haves in your closet, coming up with stylish winter outfits for ladies will be as simple as catching a snowflake.
